Rishabh Pant’s eagerly awaited comeback to competitive cricket is on the horizon as he gears up to lead the Delhi Capitals in the IPL 2024 season. However, uncertainties loom over his role as the full-time captain, with his fitness status taking center stage.

Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting hopes Rishabh Pant will be fit to start in their IPL 2024 opener on March 23.

Following a prolonged absence of nearly 15 months due to a tragic car accident in December 2022, Pant’s captaincy for the upcoming IPL season remains unconfirmed. Addressing the leadership situation and Pant’s readiness, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting emphasized that the decision hinges on Pant’s progress in terms of fitness.

As the Capitals kickstart their campaign against Punjab Kings in Mohali on March 23, Pant is intensifying his recovery and rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru.

Ponting highlighted the significance of Pant’s fitness in determining his captaincy role, stating, “It’s a big decision we’ll have to make because if he is fit, you’d think he’d step straight back into that captaincy role.” However, if Pant’s fitness is not optimal, the team management will contemplate alternative strategies.

In Pant’s absence last season, David Warner assumed the leadership mantle as the Capitals struggled, finishing ninth in the standings with just five wins in 14 matches.

Recent developments indicate Pant’s gradual return to form, with the southpaw actively participating in practice matches in Bengaluru. Ponting expressed encouragement, stating, “He’s played some practice matches over the last couple of weeks, which has been really encouraging for us.”

Acknowledging Pant’s resilience and dedication to fitness, Ponting emphasized the challenges the cricketer endured during his hiatus. Pant’s absence was keenly felt not only by the Delhi Capitals but also by the Indian national team, which missed his explosive batting prowess.

Ponting stressed the importance of Pant adhering to his natural aggressive style of batting upon his return. He affirmed his support for Pant’s instinctive gameplay, urging him to play freely and trust his abilities.

As Pant prepares to rekindle his cricketing journey, Ponting remains optimistic about his swift adaptation to the rigors of competitive cricket. With practice games and training camps aimed at honing his skills and mindset, Pant is poised to reclaim his spot as a dynamic force on the cricket field.
